The Berlin Dom
Does a building have the power to move you? Can it make your heart race as you wonder at its beauty? Great architecture can do this, and it happened to me when I visited the Berliner Dom.
The Dom is located on Museum Island in the middle of the Spree river, and it dominates the landscape with its verdigris domes and golden spires. The Protestant cathedral of Berlin, it has roots dating back to the middle of the 15th century. After several reconstructions, the present building is in the Neo-Baroque style, and is much more ornate than most Protestant cathedrals. A visit on a sunny day deserves a climb up the 270 narrow steps to the viewing area, where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the city below.
Entrance to the cathedral is 7 Euro, but if you have the Berlin Welcome Card you can save 3 Euro off the admission price. Take your time, enjoy the views, and take lots of photos. The Berlin Dom is a magnificent piece of architecture, and a gift to enjoy and treasure.
